‘We need to get more young people excited about science and technology again.’

During her visit to the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicon Technology ISIT in Itzehoe, Research Minister Dorit Stenke emphasised the central importance of STEM subjects for the future of the state with this clear appeal. As part of her summer tour, the minister and Member of the State Parliament Heiner Rickers gained an in-depth understanding of the institute's research activities and current developments. For Stenke, it was her first opportunity to visit ISIT in person since succeeding Karin Prien.

The European flagship project APECS

The visit focused on the APECS project, which is based on the EU Chips Act. The project involves a consortium of ten partners from eight European countries and aims to establish a Europe-wide infrastructure for novel chip integration ('heterogeneous integration'). This will give industry, SMEs and start-ups access to cutting-edge packaging technologies, strengthening Europe's independence in chiplet manufacturing.

APECS combines basic research with practical application, covering everything from design and manufacturing to testing procedures. Sustainability, quality and safety are all equally important considerations. The project has the potential to advance applications in a wide range of areas, including the automotive industry, medical technology, industrial production, and aerospace.
