Standardization of Solid-State Transformers for DC Ships

In his short presentation titled “Standardization Activities on Solid-State Transformers,” Dr. Marius Langwasser discusses the role of solid-state transformers (SST) in the electrification of large ships and current efforts to standardize this technology.

Solid-state transformers are a key technology for future DC-based vehicle electrical systems. They can help make onboard electrical power systems more efficient, modular, and compact, and enable the direct integration of batteries and fuel cells.

However, standardization remains a key challenge for the widespread and interoperable use of solid-state transformers. In his presentation, Dr. Marius Langwasser provides an overview of current standardization efforts and discusses their significance for the further development and market introduction of DC-based power systems in the shipping industry.

The presentation is part of the SMM workshop “Making DC Ships Market-Ready,” which focuses on current developments in DC-based energy systems for shipping. In addition to the ALL-DC-SHIPS project, the European project STEESMAT – Smarter Power for Cleaner Ships will also be presented. STEESMAT focuses on smart power systems for more efficient and lower-emission shipping.

As part of the workshop, Dr. Marius Langwasser will also take part in a panel discussion on DC ships.

In his presentation “High-Efficiency LV/MVDC Grids and Their Robust Control,” Davide D'Amato will present the possibilities for designing energy systems with robust control. Various factors, such as the rapid expansion of AI-driven data centers and the integration of renewable energies, place high demands on LV/MVDC grids, which should be highly efficient, scalable, and compact.

Solid-state transformers are a solution that enables the direct coupling of AC and DC grids.

In his presentation, Davide D'Amato addresses three key areas of application for this solution:

- In microgrids, they lead to improved voltage stability and fault control.

- In data centers, they help to create low-loss and dynamically controllable DC distribution networks.

- In electrolyzer connections, they enable precise current and power control and increase efficiency and operational flexibility.

In the presentation entitled “Pushing the Boundaries of Battery Systems with Data-Driven Temperature-Controlled Charging and Power Delivery”, Daniel Astudillo presents an innovative approach for optimizing fast charging and power delivery through data-driven thermal control. Using in-situ operational data, this methodology ensures safety, extends battery life, and improves performance without requiring laboratory experiments, making it ideal for high-power applications like EVs and energy storage systems.

Our 500 kVA - 9 levels modular multilevel converter (MMC)

In the presentation "Enabling Tomorrow's Hybrid Grids with Modular Multilevel Converter Technology", Davide D'Amato will be informing about Modular Multilevel Converter (MMCs). MMCs are an essential technology for the energy transition, providing improved efficiency, power quality, fault-tolerance, enhanced density, and modular design. These attributes position MMCs as indispensable enablers of the next generation of hybrid grids, integrating both AC and DC systems.

New possibilities in microfabrication lead to improved or new products. In the lecture “Biased AMR sensor with monolithically integrated NdFeB magnets”, Dr. Björn Gojdka presents the prototype of an AMR sensor equipped with integrated permanent magnets. The development was carried out together with the company Sensitec GmbH. The example shows how Fraunhofer ISIT's PowderMEMS® microfabrication process contributes to miniaturization, functional integration and cost reduction.
