Our researchers will present the following topics at LASER World of PHOTONICS in June:

Laser material processing is a key technology in the manufacturing of modern quality products. Faster laser beam deflection systems can significantly improve this technology.

Fraunhofer ISIT has transferred the advantages of MEMS scanner technology to macroscopic conditions.

Novel scanner mirrors with apertures down to 2 cm now allow highly dynamic biaxial laser beam deflection for CW laser powers up to 500 watts.

These compact MEMS scanners thus open up new fields of application and products.

LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) is an indispensable key technology in the development of autonomous driving cars. LIDAR systems use emitted laser beams to very accurately detect their surroundings and generate a precise image. Their mode of operation is very similar to radar systems in aviation or shipping, except that they emit laser beams instead of radio waves. Their reflections produce a three-dimensional image. LIDAR technology is frequently used in autonomous driving and robotics.

Remelted glass wafers with specially adapted optical functions.

Based on a glass wafer reshaping technique developed and patented by Fraunhofer ISIT, specially shaped optical windows can be mass-produced at wafer level, enabling low-cost mass production of optical packages. In the context of MEMS scanners and IR MEMS devices, this manufacturing process is the key to hermetically encapsulated MEMS devices with optimal optical functionality.

Fraunhofer CAPS promotes the cooperative development and processing of a new generation of laser systems through a cross-institute research structure by increasing the output power of ultrashort pulse lasers (UKP) by an order of magnitude and investigating their potential applications. 

The focus is on three research fields whose current development status will be presented at LASER by the participating institutes Fraunhofer ILT, Fraunhofer IOF, Fraunhofer IZI-BB, Fraunhofer HHI, Fraunhofer IFAM, Fraunhofer IKTS, Fraunhofer ISIT Fraunhofer IWS and Fraunhofer IAF:

Laser beam sources
Including gas multipass cell for post-compression of ultrashort femtosecond lasers; high-resolution nanoscope with an EUV laser source.

Systems engineering
Multi-beam demonstrator

Laser application
Including large electrolyzer structured by ultrafast laser for the conversion of electrical energy into hydrogen; ultrafast laser drilling for e.g. aerosol generators; flexible glass lenses for thermal imaging cameras
