Customized battery solutions from northern Germany

The Research Center for Applied Battery Technology Schleswig-Holstein (FAB-SH) of Fraunhofer ISIT specializes in the field of energy storage development. The manufacturing technology is characterized by a very high flexibility and is thus an ideal technological platform for the production of prototypes and small series for a wide range of applications, such as traction and stationary energy storage. Furthermore, FAB-SH has extensive experience in the scaling of manufacturing processes and the characterization of cells of different chemistry and design. These competences enable the development of customized storage solutions and furthermore complete systems with the necessary hardware and software for control.

Rapid battery cell development: Application-specific cell design

Two decades of research and development and battery cell design activities have enhanced our ability to respond quickly to customer requests for cell prototypes and low-volume production. Connected directly to your applications, our specialists are experts in precisely matching device and material requirements, formulations, cell design and functionalities to enhance the customer experience for your applications.

Our offerings range from rugged battery cells in high-performance, high-pressure and high-temperature designs, to flexible variants in a variety of form factors, to smart cells for low-volume production. Upon request, we also offer full support in transferring your customized battery cells to production through our network of qualified partners.

Dry coating process for battery electrodes: environmentally friendly, cost-efficient, space- and energy-saving.

The fabrication of heavy-duty electrodes is a promising approach to increase the energy density of Li-ion batteries, as they have a favorable ratio between active and inactive materials. However, modern tape casting processes with relatively high solvent content are limited in terms of layer thickness and drying process, which is associated with undesirable effects such as binder migration. Therefore, advanced processes for electrode fabrication are urgently needed.

Fraunhofer ISIT has developed a dry coating process that does not require any solvents at all. Drying the coated electrode slurry is an energy-intensive process. It also requires a large amount of space, as long drying distances are necessary for an optimal process result. The dry coating process developed by Fraunhofer ISIT eliminates the need for solvents. In addition, higher loadings are possible that exceed the range of conventional electrodes. This leads to significant cost savings and is more environmentally friendly.

High-current lithium-based batteries are commonly used in compact and portable equipment where downtime or unplanned maintenance does not pose financial risks. However, in a growing number of industrial markets, battery storage must be based on safe and reliable technologies to ensure long life and meet energy needs regardless of weather conditions and over the lifetime of the equipment.

The ultra-high performance batteries developed in our laboratory, which can be manufactured with a discharge rate of up to 60 C, can be considered a turning point in terms of safety, reliability and performance. Our batteries are based on different cell chemistries (classical, specialized) and are used in numerous industries.

Nowadays, a device powered by a smart battery is often equipped with electronics that provide real-time monitoring and reporting of critical performance data.

Our contribution to battery condition monitoring during operation is based on integrating different type of sensors to measure electrode potentials, temperature, pressure, and volume expansion.

With two decades of accumulated experience, we understand how battery cells must be designed to maximizing  device and user safety, accelerate charging time and enhance device lifetime.
