Editorial

Dear readers,

The year 2024 lies behind us, a year full of new challenges and opportunities that we have tackled with passion and a spirit of innovation. Over the past year, we have seen our institute shine not only as a place of research and development, but also as a reliable partner for industry and science. In a time characterized by rapid technological progress, we have taken great strides forward together and further expanded our expertise in key areas of the future. With the support of our employees and in close cooperation with universities and colleges, we have been able to break new ground in order to meet the high demands of modern technological development. Thanks to the cooperation with our industry partners and the active support of our customers, we believe we are well equipped to achieve new technological milestones together.

EU-Chips-Act

The European Chips Act strengthens Europe's competitiveness in the semiconductor industry and promotes the digital and green transition. One example of this is the collaboration between CEA-Leti and the Fraunhofer Institutes on a pilot line for memory technologies. Together with partners from seven countries, five innovative technologies are being developed to expand Europe's semiconductor expertise. The project shows how European cooperation creates forward-looking impetus for research and industry - a decisive step towards technological sovereignty.

Promoting young talent for scientific progress

Promoting young talent is particularly important to us. Once again this year, we welcomed numerous students from Kiel University, Kiel University of Applied Sciences, Flensburg University of Applied Sciences, West Coast University of Applied Sciences and Lübeck University of Applied Sciences to our lectures and excursions. We were also able to get many pupils interested in science and technology through events such as MINT and Girls' Day. We are particularly proud that our trainees were honored at the award ceremony for the best and that our employees won the InnoQuarter Thesis Prize: Niklas Kyoushi and Patrick Schütt took second and third place with their theses.

2024 in summary

I am particularly proud of our team's achievements, which have once again shown how success is made possible by our outstanding collaboration. And with renewed vigor, we are now embarking on a year that will once again prove how crucial innovative research and the continuous exchange between science and industry are for the progress of our society.

Further challenges and exciting opportunities lie ahead of us in 2025. Thank you for your support - let's make 2025 another successful chapter for Fraunhofer ISIT!
